Scrivn Scan · tester guide
Scrivn Scan turns your Android phone into a measuring tool. Stand in the middle of a room, tap each corner, and it draws the floor plan with every wall, door, window and cabinet on it. It maps wet walls and floors as you go. The outside of the house is measured in Scrivn, from photos. Thank you for testing it. This page shows how it works, what gets the best numbers, and how to send us a scan that came out wrong. That last part is what helps us most.
Scan isn't on Google Play yet, so testers install it from our site.
When Scan is on Google Play you may need to uninstall this test copy before installing that one.
The ring is the one thing to watch. Its colour tells you whether a tap will read:
A closet or small room against walls you've already tapped? Just tap its own corners. Once they close it off, Scan takes the rest from the walls already there.
Stairs and Ceiling are on the second row; the rest are on More…. Each has its own drawing in the app (tap ? once it is lit).
Four taps round the flight like a rectangle: both ends of the near riser, then the far riser, starting on the same side. The line at the end says which way it read the flight. Check it before moving on.
Aim at the ceiling and tap, then tap once more to check it. A flat ceiling: the second tap on the same spot - the two reads should agree. For a slope or a vault, tap the high side, then where the ceiling meets the wall at its low side. You can also set it on Review.
For a corner you can't see. Tap the wall leading into it twice, at least 3 ft apart, then the wall leading out of it twice. The corner is worked out where the two walls cross.
Where the floor stops and there is no wall, like the top of a stair between half walls. Two taps, one at each end, in place of two corners.
The free end of a thin partition: one tap on its end. It's the hardest tap in the app. If it won't come in straight after a try or two, leave it out.
A fireplace or pantry built across a corner with short returns: four taps (wall, front, front, wall). A plain angled corner needs nothing special: just two corner taps.
Finish this room (on More…) closes a room where you stand. Use it when the last wall is one you can't tap, or when a closet's other walls are already there.
Join every room at its doorway. Joining lays the room exactly against its neighbour. It's also what puts a room back in place after tracking drops. Undo right after a join takes it back.
Forgot a doorway in the room you left? Open Review and hold your finger on that wall: it offers Door, Opening or Closet door there, and the join comes up with it. To go back and add to an earlier room, tap its name on Review (during a capture).
A basement, a main floor and an upstairs go in one capture, a level each. Hold your finger on Add room:
Optional, for water jobs: the wet walls, floor and ceiling of each room, marked while you stand in it. Scrivn turns them into the claim's moisture map.
Moisture on the bottom row swaps the chips for Wet line, Floor, Ceiling, Setup and Done.
Review then draws the air movers and dehumidifiers the drying plan calls for, and says what they come to: Drying: 2 air movers · 1 LGR dehumidifier (medium) · Class 2. It is the same drying calculation Scrivn uses. Send carries the wet lines, readings, painted areas and setup into the claim.
The phone keeps track of where it is by what it sees. Bare walls, dark stairwells, doorways and fast turns can make it lose the room: the ring turns red and the line says Finding the room again — hold the phone up.
Tap the mini-map to open Review, during a capture or after Stop. It's the whole plan, drawn to scale.
When you press Send or Share, Review shows each closet door in turn with a dashed Closet? box behind it. Tap the box if there's a closet there and it's drawn in; leave it if not. Next closet moves on and the last one reads Send (or Share). A closet bigger than the box? Back, then tap it as a room of its own and join it at its door.
Start with Sketch + walk-through to take 360° photos. They are a step of their own at the end, after the sketch and the moisture: the camera stops tracking the rooms while you take them, so do your tapping first.
The first time, a card explains the step. If the phone lost its bearing (the app was left and came back), the line says The phone lost its bearing - walk a few steps, then 360 again.
The outside isn't measured in Scan. It's done in Scrivn, from photos taken with the phone's own camera, on any phone, iPhone too. Scrivn walks you round the house one step at a time: the front, then each corner and each side, a photo at each and a measurement where you have one. Then send it to the Scrivn team, or measure it yourself.
Every step is saved as you take it, on the phone first: no signal is fine, and a walk half done picks up where you left it. Back a step and Take it again are on every step. Add photos my own way leaves the walk for the old way (draw the shape, add photos, tap corners); Back to the step-by-step walk returns to it.
Easiest on a computer or a tablet: the photos are small on a phone.
+ Add building at the top of the Exterior, then Shed, Detached garage or Workshop (or type a name). For a simple building, Quick box: its two lengths, the wall height, the roof, the siding, its doors and windows. Or From photos: the same walk round it. Each building gets its own pages in the report.
Nothing to pick first. At the corner where your home meets the neighbour's, tap Joins the neighbour: Scrivn takes the home as a semi (one such corner) or a middle townhouse (two). No 45° there: take the front at an angle from that end instead, the whole front in. The shared wall is skipped, not photographed or counted; at its far end, the back at an angle the same way. A middle unit ends with two angled photos of the front and two of the back. Measuring it yourself, Where this home ends: tap where this home ends at the ground, often a downspout, a trim line or where the colour changes.
Account is at the top left whenever you're not capturing. You don't need an account to measure or to share a plan.
If you have a Scrivn account, Scan sends rooms straight into a claim.
Basements and rural jobs often have one bar or none. Both apps keep working.
These come from walking real houses with the app. Each one fixed something we saw go wrong.
Best practice in every room: tape the longest wall and type it in on Review. It checks the phone against a real measurement and sets the plan's scale. In a dim room tape two. If every wall reads short by about the same, tick Scale the whole room to this wall.
In dim rooms the walls read short, by 2% to 7% (a 12 ft wall coming in 3 to 10 in short). Doors and windows read true either way. If a room is dim the line says Room's dim — turn the lights on for truer lengths.
The depth camera can't read a mirror or glass, and a big mirror can throw the phone off its place. Tap corners from where the mirror is out of view; for a corner in or behind one, use Can't reach on the walls either side.
A sofa, a TV or a shelf in front of the corner makes it read short. Aim above or below the clutter, wherever you can see the crease where the walls meet.
Tap every corner from one spot near the middle, 6 to 8 ft away. Walking to each corner and tapping it close up is slower and reads worse.
Turn slowly and walk through doorways looking ahead, not at the floor or a bare wall. Most tracking drops are a fast turn or a blank view.
Tap every shared doorway in both rooms and join the room there. It's the one thing that lines the rooms up exactly, even after a drop.
A quick look at the plan in the room catches a wrong corner while you can still tap it again. Undo is always safe.
A walk-in or anything bigger than the dashed box: tap it as its own room and join it at its closet door.
The photo of each outside corner, both walls in, is what ties one wall to the next: the back corners too. Skip them and the depth comes out short. Then tape the long side wall front to back, and any wall Scrivn flags (Outside of the house: from photos).
This is the most useful thing you can do as a tester. Every fix so far started with a scan like yours and its log, which is the app's own record of what it saw and decided, tap by tap.
What's sent: the scan's measurements, the app's recent log (this run and any others since the app was opened), your phone's model and Android version, and what you write. No photos. It works with or without a Scrivn account, but it needs an internet connection; if it can't send, it says so and offers Try again.
Something that isn't about a scan (the app crashed, a button doesn't make sense)? Report it the same way; a note with no scan is fine.
